The formula

Profit = sale price + shipping the buyer paid − platform fees − your shipping label − packaging − what you paid for the item.

Fees are where most mental math goes wrong, because each platform charges differently:

  • eBay: for most categories, 13.6% of the total including shipping, plus $0.40 per order ($0.30 for orders of $10 or less). Some categories differ.
  • Poshmark: a flat $2.95 under $15, and 20% at $15 and up. The buyer pays shipping.
  • Mercari: 10% of the item price plus buyer-paid shipping.
  • Depop: no US selling fee, but payment processing of 3.3% + $0.45.
  • Etsy: 6.5% transaction fee, 3% + $0.25 payment processing, and a $0.20 listing fee. Offsite Ads are extra when they apply.
  • Facebook Marketplace: free for local pickup; shipped orders are 10% with a $0.80 minimum.
  • Vinted: no standard seller fee; buyers pay protection and shipping.

These are standard US rates as of October 2026. Platforms change fees, so Haulfolio lets you edit every preset and type the exact fee from your payout.

An example

You paid $8 for a jacket and sell it for $35 with free shipping on a $7 label. On Poshmark the fee is 20% ($7), so you keep $35 − $7 − $8 = $20, and the buyer pays shipping. On eBay with free shipping, the fee is 13.6% of $35 plus $0.40 ($5.16), and you pay the $7 label: $35 − $5.16 − $7 − $8 = $14.84. Same jacket, same price, about $5 apart.
